21 months serving in Chile
This week we visited Santiago North Mission to deliver some packages to the missionaries, it’s always very pleasant to meet Sister Harrison that receives us with a big smile, and we want you to know her too, that’s why we made an interview to her and we also took advantage to know Sister Johnstun who will replace with her husband, Sister Harrison in two more months as the new Secretaries of the Mission.
Sister Harrison, where you from?
I’m from United States, from the State of South Carolina.
Which is your assignment here in the mission and for how long have you and your husband been serving?
With my husband we are the secretaries of Santiago North Mission and we’ve been 21 months serving together. He’s now fulfilling an assignment outside the office delivering packages and letters for the missionaries.
In how long are you going back home and who will stay here as secretaries?
We go back home in 2 more months and the Johnstun Family are here to learn everything so they can continue after us. They come from Ohio and speak spanish very well because they served as Mission President in Mexico for three years, they are very kind.
Can you tell us about your experience living in Chile and also with the language?
I love the people, the food, the weather sometimes it’s very cold. One thing that really scared me at first was the “small earthquakes” but after 2 years it’s kinda normal. With the language a have a colombian friend who taught me spanish but no “chilean spanish” which is totally different but I learned more here.
In what way serving a mission has been an impact in your life?
I’m very grateful for the young missionaries because they work a lot, they have patience and big hearts, it’s a pleasure to serve with them. I LOVE THE MISSIONARIES!
What advice will you give to the future missionaries?
I’ll give them the advice that they work hard in their own ward learning everything possible, walk a lot and preparing their bodies to walk several hours a day. It’s very intense, it’s not easy mentally and physically, they need the strength to remain.
And what will you say to the families who has missionaries in Chile?
You don’t have to worry, your missionaries are here with President who is in charge of everything they have their companions who are really good, you don’t have to worry because it’s a huge blessing to the families that they are here.
Send your sons and daughters to a mission and enjoy your vacations! hahaha
21 meses sirviendo en Chile
Esta semana visitamos la Misión Santiago Norte para entregar algunos paquetes para los misioneros, siempre es muy grato encontrarnos con Hna. Harrison que nos recibe con una gran sonrisa y queremos que ustedes también la conozcan, por eso le hicimos una entrevista y aprovechamos de conocer a Hna. Johnstun que la reemplazará con su esposo en 2 meses más como los nuevos Secretarios de la Misión.
¿Hna. Harrison de que parte es Usted?
Soy de los Estados Unidos, específicamente el Estado Carolina del Sur
¿Cual es su asignación aquí en la misión y cuánto tiempo lleva sirviendo con su esposo?
Con mi esposo somos secretarios de la Misión Santiago Norte y llevamos 21 meses sirviendo juntos, Él ahora está cumpliendo con una asignación fuera de la oficina entregando los paquetes y cartas a los misioneros.
¿En cuanto tiempo vuelven a su casa y quiénes quedarán aquí como secretarios?
Volvemos a casa en 2 meses más y el Matrimonio Johnstun están aquí aprendiendo todo para continuar después de nosotros. Ellos son de Ohio, hablan muy bien español porque sirvieron por tres años como Presidente de Misión en México, son muy buenos.
¿Cómo ha sido su experiencia viviendo en Chile y en especial con el idioma?
Me encantan las personas, la comida, el clima algunas veces porque hace mucho frío. Una cosa que al comienzo me asustó un poco los temblores, pero después de dos años ya es algo normal.
Con el idioma, yo tengo una amiga de Colombia que me enseño español, pero no “español chileno” que es diferente, pero aprendí más aquí.
¿De qué manera ha impactado en su vida servir esta misión?
Yo estoy muy agradecida a los misioneros jóvenes porque ellos trabajan mucho, tienen mucha paciencia y corazones muy grandes, es un placer para mi servir con ellos. Me encantan los misioneros.
¿Qué consejo le daría a los futuros misioneros?
Yo les aconsejo que trabajen mucho en su propio barrio, aprendiendo todo lo que sea posible, caminar mucho, preparar sus cuerpos caminando varias horas al día. Es muy intenso, no es fácil mental y físicamente, necesita fuerza para permanecer!
Y la mejor manera para prepararse espiritualmente es SER OBEDIENTES, cada momento, cada día.
Y a las familias de los misioneros que ya están en Chile ¿Qué les dirían?…
No tienen que preocuparse, sus misioneros están aquí con Presidente, quién está a cargo de todo, tienen compañeros muy buenos, no tienen que preocuparse porque es una gran bendición para las familias que ellos estén aquí.
Envíen a sus hijos y disfruten de las vacaciones! ahahah
